Ch 13 Roast Beef of Old England

from Murder & Miss Austen's Ball by Ridgway Kennedy

/

about

Once again, yr. humble author is forced to stand in for our principals.

The Roast Beef of Old England is a ballad written by Henry Fielding for his play The Grub-Street Opera, which was first performed in 1731, according to the wisdom of Wikipedia. The lyrics have been amended and added to over the years. The song increased in popularity with a new setting by the composer Richard Leveridge and it became customary for theatre audiences to sing it before, after, and occasionally during, new plays. The Royal Navy continues to use the tune to this day as a call Mess Dinners. Officers of the Royal Artillery are also played in to dinner by this tune and, it is reportedly played at United States Marine Corps formal mess dinners during the presentation of the beef.
